US Muslim Groups Urge Condemnation of Anti-Muslim Remarks by Ogles

(MENAFN) American Muslim advocacy organizations, alongside a Democratic lawmaker, called on the US Congress on Tuesday to support a resolution denouncing what they described as anti-Muslim comments made by Republican Rep. Andy Ogles.

At a Capitol Hill news conference, Democratic Rep. Al Green said the response to such remarks reflected a broader rejection of hate and discrimination in public institutions.

“You have shown today by your presence that you will not tolerate hateful messages emanating from the halls of Congress. You will not tolerate Islamophobia in Congress,” he said.

He warned that targeting any religion could have wider consequences for all faiths, adding that discrimination against one group risks normalizing similar treatment of others. He also referenced civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., saying, “injustice anywhere is truly a threat to justice everywhere.”

Green said criticism directed at Islam by a member of Congress should be seen as affecting society more broadly. “This assault on Islam by a representative in the Congress really is an assault on all of us, either directly or indirectly,” he said.

Speaking at the same event, Osama Jamal, secretary-general of the US Council of Muslim Organizations, emphasized inclusivity in American society, saying the country is made up of immigrants from diverse backgrounds and that all citizens should feel welcome regardless of religion or ethnicity.

“Hate and discrimination against one another have no place in America,” Jamal said, expressing support for the congressional resolution led by Green.
