UN Chief Supports Iran-US Ceasefire Deal
Guterres' spokesperson Stephane Dujarric delivered the statement Tuesday, saying: "He calls on all the parties to the current conflict in the Middle East to comply with their obligations under international law and to abide by the terms of the ceasefire in order to pave the way toward a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region."
The UN chief's statement left no ambiguity about the urgency at stake. "The Secretary-General underscores that an end to hostilities is urgently needed to protect civilian lives and alleviate human suffering," Dujarric said.
Guterres also extended formal recognition to the diplomatic efforts that made the ceasefire possible. "He expresses sincere appreciation for the efforts of Pakistan and other countries involved in facilitating the ceasefire," the statement read.
In a further signal of the UN's active engagement, the statement confirmed that the Secretary-General's personal envoy, Jean Arnault, is currently in the region, working to bolster efforts toward a lasting and comprehensive peace settlement.
The endorsement from UN headquarters adds significant international weight to the ceasefire, even as questions persist over whether all armed actors across the broader Middle East conflict will abide by its terms.
