The board of directors unanimously endorsed the decision, which follows what Apple described as a carefully developed long-term succession plan.
At present, Ternus holds the position of senior vice president of Hardware Engineering at Apple. The company highlighted that he has been with Apple for 25 years and will also join the board of directors starting September 1.
This development represents Apple’s first CEO change since 2011, when Cook replaced co-founder Steve Jobs.
In addition, Apple announced that Arthur Levinson, who has acted as non-executive chairman for the last 15 years, will transition to the role of lead independent director on September 1.
In a separate update, Apple also confirmed that Johny Srouji has been appointed chief hardware officer with immediate effect, taking over leadership of the hardware division that was previously under Ternus’s supervision.
