Russia Calls for Removing Darfur Case from ICC Jurisdiction
(MENAFN) Russia has demanded that the Darfur case be withdrawn from the authority of the International Criminal Court (ICC), alleging that the institution is politically motivated and ineffective, according to a statement posted by the Russian Embassy in Egypt on Telegram on Tuesday.
The embassy claimed that the ICC had “sabotaged” its duty to investigate the long-standing conflict in Sudan’s Darfur region for almost twenty years, arguing that the court had only shown renewed attention now as the situation deteriorates.
Moscow maintains that the ICC has gone beyond its legal boundaries and that its “politically driven decisions” could worsen Sudan’s instability.
“Against the backdrop of the current bloody escalation in the Sudanese city of Al Fashir, Russia is urging the withdrawal of the Darfur file from the ICC,” the statement declared.
According to Moscow, Sudan’s internal issues should be addressed through “inclusive internal dialogue” rather than through foreign judicial intervention, which it argued would merely intensify the crisis.
Russian representatives also cast doubt on the ICC’s effectiveness, pointing out that despite having an annual budget of almost $200 million and operating for two decades, the court has issued only 14 final rulings.
Meanwhile, during a press briefing in Doha, Qatar, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized that it was crucial for the “entire international community” to ensure that both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF) understand that “this war is an absolutely intolerable thing” and that Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity “must be preserved at all costs.”
