Court Grants Indian Professor Interim Bail After Arrest
Ali Khan Mahmudabad, an associate professor at Ashoka University, was taken into custody at his residence in Delhi on Sunday.
Mahmudabad faces accusations of jeopardizing national security and fostering discord between communities, based on a complaint filed by a youth member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He has denied these charges.
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court ruled for Mahmudabad's release, although it declined to halt the ongoing investigation against him.
"Having regard to the two online posts that have led to the FIR [complaint], we are satisfied that no case of staying the investigation is made out," the court stated. It also confirmed that a three-member special investigation team would continue to probe the matter.
Additionally, the court placed restrictions on Mahmudabad, preventing him from publishing any online articles or giving speeches concerning the posts under investigation.
Following the court's decision, Ashoka University issued a statement expressing that it was "heartened" by the ruling to give Mahmudabad bail.
